To take a break from the midrange and flagship devices we’ve been testing recently, we will focus on some more economical options, one of which is Xiaomi’s latest entry-level offering, the Redmi 12C.
We put Xiaomi’s latest budget offering, the Redmi 12C, through its paces and see how it fares for regular use as a daily driver, which is portrayed as a proficient and performing budget-friendly gadget. Is it worthwhile? Should you think about it? These are some of the questions we will address in this review.
The Redmi 12C is protected by a polycarbonate finish on the outside. There are ridges all around its body, which assists with grip. It’s safe to assume it won’t readily fall out of your hand or pocket. It has a unibody curved rear with flat sides that improves device handling. The last thing you’ll notice is that it sports a back fingerprint sensor right next to its little camera bump. Despite its dimensions of 168.76 x 76.41 x 8.77mm, it seems very light, weighing only 192 grams. The phone comes in Ocean Blue colorway, Graphite Gray, Mint Green, and Lavander Purple.

Display
To elaborate on its screen, the Redmi 12C provides high-quality graphics. Its new and enhanced 6.71″ HD+ display with a 20:6:9 aspect ratio provides brilliant colors and large-screen real estate. It’s not the clearest, and it could do a better job of bringing out the black in the pictures, but it’s more than enough to binge-watch your favorite programs. With the larger screen size, it definitely feels more immersive. It operates well in the sun as long as the brightness is maximum. Overall, the pictures are excellent, especially given the price.

In terms of speakers, it performs a good job. Listening to many types of music sounds good and loud enough for you to enjoy music. What I believe they can do better is add more bass and oomph. You can clearly hear your audio in little tight settings. Unfortunately, it suffers a little in vast open settings, therefore I recommend connecting headphones to the device’s audio connection at the top.

Performance
The Redmi 12C is powered by an almost 2-year-old MediaTek Helio G85 chipset, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal storage. We’ve already used the Helio G85, and it’s no surprise that it can handle a few of today’s most popular mobile games smoothly. It’s absolutely capable of running Mobile Legends in sub-medium settings, with little to no latency or frame dips. There is a little dip in framerate at high settings, but it is not obvious enough to ruin the game. It can easily handle low-to-medium settings in Call of Duty: Mobile, a more demanding title. And for my personal favorite benchmarking game, Survivor.io, it’s more than capable of running it at medium-to-high settings, although it does struggle once the mobs arrive, so I’d recommend going with medium and turning on Reduced VFX.
We should mention that the Redmi 12C is the brand’s entry-level offering, so don’t expect absolutely fantastic gameplay at the high mid-range to flagship levels. Certainly, there will be instances when you feel input latency, but it will not continue long enough to make gaming impossible. We also discovered that if you want to charge your phone while playing, you should avoid doing so because the phone will barely keep any juice thereafter. The 10W charging is insufficient to compensate for the battery depletion caused by gaming.
The screen is also limited to 60Hz, which means you won’t be able to play any of your favorite mobile games at 90-120Hz or games that demand you to run at those frame rates.
So, yeah, you could technically still game with the Redmi 12C; just keep in mind that it is an entry-level phone.

Camera
The Redmi 12C has a 50MP f/1.8 main camera and a 5MP f/2.2 front camera for photography. Beginning with wide-detail images, it has good colors and contrasts. It can capture photographs in excellent detail with good illumination (bottom right).
The Redmi 12C struggles significantly in low-light situations and at night. While certain, you can expose images with sufficient clarity and visual detail, as shown in this sample. If you don’t have a tripod, the end effect is still a grainy mess.
In terms of selfies, its 5MP front-facing camera is adequate for capturing detailed photos as long as there is adequate illumination.
The device’s video recording capabilities are limited to 1080P at 30 frames per second. It’s nothing special and nothing to write home about.
Overall, the Redmi 12C, while being an entry-level product, provides adequate photo-shooting skills, capable of producing good enough image and video quality as long as there is plenty of light. While the phone does include a night mode, the lack of significant OIS or EIS stabilization makes it difficult to utilize the capability properly.

Battery & Charging
Let’s start with the battery. With a gigantic 5000 mAh battery, this can easily last you the entire day. The Helio G85 processor is not demanding enough to drain your battery while idle or using typical programs, so a full charge can easily last a day or more, especially given the price point. My main issue with it is its charging pace. Its 10W Quick Charging speed is not the fastest on the market and may be hampered by its Micro-USB charging connector.
Finally, if you run out of storage space for your games, photos, or anything else that takes up space, the Redmi 12C features expandable storage of up to 1TB via SD card, allowing you to add even more files.
Conclusion
If you’re on a tight budget, the Redmi 12C is an excellent choice for your next daily driver. This gadget outperforms its pricing point because of its workhorse SoC, Helio G85 processor, 6.71″ HD Display, 5000 mAh battery, expandable storage, and new-and-improved 50MP camera. i hope you will benefit from reading this review.
